The White House Banned Three Outlets for Coverage It Doesn't Like
Saturday morning, Secret Service confiscated the White House press passes of reporters from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico and turned them away at the gate. Friday night, President Trump had announced the ban on Truth Social, citing "FAKE NEWS" and coverage he called fiction. He said other outlets could follow.
On Monday the three outlets filed an emergency First Amendment suit in D.C. federal court. The complaint says the ban is textbook viewpoint discrimination: the government revoked access because it objected to their reporting. The White House Correspondents' Association called the move unconstitutional. Courts have restored press passes in similar fights (Acosta, Karem, and the recent AP pool disputes).
You can hate those outlets' coverage. That is not the point. Once the executive can revoke credentials as punishment for "negative stories," the same tool is available to every future administration against every future critic. The people's house is not a loyalty club for reporters.
