NIH Built a 235-Word Speech Filter for Science Grants

Peer review isn’t enough anymore. After scientists clear NIH’s scientific process, a computational keyword scanner can still flag, kill, delay, or rewrite the grant.

Seventeen researchers filed a class action in the Northern District of California (Sep 16) arguing NIH’s ~235-term screen is viewpoint discrimination under the First Amendment. Flagged phrases include “equity,” “gender,” “Latinx,” “climate change,” “pregnant individual,” and other terms the administration treats as proxies for disfavored speech. Some awardees were told to scrub language; refuse, and funding dies. Inside Higher Ed also reports the complaint lists terms such as “vaccine hesitant” among flags — the same machinery that polices progressive jargon can police medical dissent.

The government may set research priorities. What it may not do is run a political word-blacklist over peer-reviewed science and call it administration. Once the purse becomes a speech code, every researcher — left, right, or allergic to orthodoxy — works under a censor.
