Britain Arrested 62,000 People for Speech. That Is 34 a Day.

Big Brother Watch FOI'd UK police forces. Between 2021 and 2025 they arrested at least 62,199 people for communications offences — roughly 34 arrests every single day. About 18,500 were charged. 12,292 convicted. The rest got the raid, the device seizure, and the interview without a conviction to show for it.

The laws are vague by design: Malicious Communications Act 1988, Communications Act 2003, Online Safety Act 2023. Controversial posts, jokes, non-violent protest. Cumbria arrested people at about 14 times the rate of neighboring Northumbria. Same country, same statutes, a postcode lottery for whether your tweet gets you cuffed.

Speech is not a privilege the state hands out when it likes the tone. When police can arrest you for words and most cases never even reach a conviction, the process is the punishment. That is the chilling effect working as intended.
