Taxpayers Now Fund a School That Covers Girls at Seven

As of September 1, Barnet Hill Academy in London left the private sector and became a voluntary-aided school — almost entirely on the public payroll. The uniform policy stayed. Girls in Year 3 (age seven) must wear a plain white hijab.

Women should be free to choose religious dress. A seven-year-old should not have it imposed as the price of a publicly funded desk.

Barnet Council called the policy "legally compliant" and "equality of opportunity." The National Secular Society called it appalling — and asked how a faith-selective school that mandates covering children can be "inclusive."

This is the same principle as any state dress code: once the government pays the bills, it either protects bodily autonomy or it becomes the enforcer of someone else's theology. Free people don't outsource a child's appearance to the council.
