Portugal Bans the Face. The State Just Claimed Your Appearance.

Portugal's president signed Law 58/2026, the so-called "burqa law." It bans clothing "intended to conceal or obstruct the display of the face" in public. It takes effect September 23. Fines run €150–€750 for negligence and €400–€3,000 where intent is found. There are exceptions for medical masks, work and artistic gear, weather, places of worship, aircraft, and diplomatic premises. The law also criminalizes forcing someone else to cover their face.

President Seguro's justification: "The face should be considered a central element of human identity and communication."

That is not a safety rule. That is the state defining which parts of you are allowed to exist in public.

If the government can outlaw a cloth over the face because identity must be visible, the same logic reaches a mask, a hoodie, sunglasses, or anything else the current majority dislikes. Religious liberty is the first casualty. The principle underneath it is broader: your body and your appearance are not a public utility.

Free people decide what they wear. A free society does not need a national dress code enforced by fines and cops.
