Javier Milei: Argentina Elects Self-Described Anarcho-Capitalist as President

In November 2023, Javier Milei won Argentina's presidential election with 56% of the vote, becoming the first self-described anarcho-capitalist head of state in modern history.

Milei ran on a platform of radical reform: slashing public spending by 15%, abolishing the central bank, and dollarizing the economy. Since taking office, he has eliminated or merged ministries, cut the public workforce by at least 30,000 positions, and achieved something Argentina hadn't seen in 123 years — a balanced budget.

Inflation, which was running over 200% annually when he took office, has been reduced to around 80%. While his austerity measures have been painful for many Argentinians, Milei's presidency represents a real-world test of libertarian economic principles at the national level — and one that the global liberty movement is watching closely.
