Brussels Ordered Google to Hand Rivals Your Private Search History. Google Is Fighting It.
On September 28 Google took Brussels to Europe’s General Court over two Digital Markets Act orders that would force Alphabet to open Android to rival AI assistants and — more important — hand competing search engines access to Google search data. The company’s competition chief put it plainly: the orders would “force us to share people’s private search history without sufficient anonymization.” Medical worries. Relationship questions. The stuff you type because you think only you can see it.
The Commission says this rebalances a monopoly. Google says the recipients are unvetted businesses, users never consented, and once the queries leave Google’s systems, AI re-identification makes “anonymous” a fiction. Reuters confirms the Luxembourg challenge. The rules are set to bite in January 2027 unless a court pauses them.
This is not a tech-company press release. It is the same pattern as ID gates and speech filters: a regulator decides your private queries are infrastructure for competitors, then calls the seizure “fairness.” Property in your thoughts doesn’t stop at the keyboard. Mandating their export without your say is still a taking.
